About the museum
The museum is housed in Villa Urania, a 19th-century villa in an eclectic style in the centre of Pescara, near Piazza della Rinascita. It holds the collection resulting from more than forty years of research by Professor Raffaele Paparella Treccia, who donated both the collections and the building to a foundation named after him and his wife, Margherita Devlet.
The main core consists of artistic majolica from Castelli, arranged in chronological order and the work of the leading masters active between the 16th and 19th centuries, including Francesco Grue, his son Carlo Antonio and his nephew Francesco Antonio Saverio, as well as the Gentili, Cappelletti and Fuina families. The decorations document the shift from the simplified compendiario style to the narrative istoriato style, with historical, allegorical, mythological and hunting scenes.
Among the most prized pieces are a Baroque service of 19 pieces bearing the coat of arms of the prelate Carlo Vincenzo Ottoni and two console vases commissioned by Prince Eugene of Savoy. The museum also holds prints and oil paintings, including a late Gothic Nativity, and the Foundation organises painting and graphic art exhibitions alongside the collection.
