About the museum
The museum documents a long series of archaeological research that led to the discovery and reconstruction of the ancient city of Anxanum. The first phase of studies ended in 1998 with the opening of the first display at Palazzo De Giorgio; the museum later moved to a larger site in the Polo museale Santo Spirito, with a more elaborate exhibition route.
The display traces the history of the city and its territory with finds including the Neolithic village of Marcianese (5th millennium BC), the first settlement on the site of the city between the late Bronze Age and the Iron Age, and the grave goods of the Frentani, an Italic people, dated to the 6th–4th centuries BC. There are also materials from the sanctuary of the Miracolo Eucaristico and from the Valle del Diocleziano in Via dei Frentani, from the villas of Mozzagrogna-Colle Pizzuto and San Vito Chietino-Murata Bassa, and from the burials in the area of the Abbey of San Giovanni in Venere, ranging from the 5th–4th centuries BC to the early Middle Ages.
