About the museum
The hospital of the Santissima Annunziata in Figline Valdarno was founded in 1399 thanks to a bequest from the notary ser Ristoro Serristori, and for centuries it was based in what is now Piazza Marsilio Ficino. In 1890 it was moved to the fifteenth-century Villa San Cerbone, where the Ospedale Serristori is still located today.
The historic spezieria (apothecary) was active from the sixteenth century: it produced medicines for the hospital and supplied them to the whole Valdarno, like a true pharmacy. Since 1890 it has occupied the red hall of the villa. After a restoration overseen by the Azienda USL Toscana centro in collaboration with the Fondazione Santa Maria Nuova, a new museum route was opened in June 2024.
The visit begins in the Chiostro delle Conchiglie (Cloister of the Shells), regarded as the pantheon of the history of the hospital and of the Serristori family, continues in the small church and ends in the spezieria. Here are preserved a rare panel with the Madonna and Child with Angels by Giovanni di Tano Fei, dating from 1399 and previously on the altar of the hospital chapel; nineteenth-century furnishings; and a selection of majolica and glass objects from the seventeenth to the nineteenth century, including albarelli, flasks and small bottles, as well as a posthumous portrait of ser Ristoro.
