About the museum

The Museo d’arte sacra della Collegiata di Santa Maria is in Figline Valdarno, in premises adjoining the Collegiata, in Piazza Marsilio Ficino. Opened in 1983, it was the first museum of its kind in the Upper Valdarno and one of the first in Tuscany. It houses paintings, sculptures, goldwork and liturgical vestments from Figline and the surrounding municipal area, in order to preserve and protect them.

The display, in three rooms reached from the sacristy, was revised for the exhibition “Rinascimento in Valdarno” of 2007 and has been enriched over the years by several donations. The first room is known as the room of the standards (delle insegne) because of its rare collection of 19th-century processional standards, and it holds a polychrome terracotta Saint Joseph from the Robbia school. The second room is devoted to Cigoli and contains the Martyrdom of Saint Lawrence, signed and dated 1590, together with a 15th-century gradual.

The third room, named after Andrea di Giusto and the furnishings, presents precious liturgical objects, two small panels with Angels in Flight attributed to Bartolomeo di Giovanni, and the Adoration of the Magi and Saints by Andrea di Giusto, dated 1436. The museum also includes the sacristy, with 17th-century furnishings and a fresco on the vault by Tommaso Gherardini.
