About the museum
The museum is housed in the Oratorio del Santissimo Crocifisso in Incisa, now part of the Comune di Figline e Incisa Valdarno. The oratory was founded by the Compagnia di San Lorenzo in connection with a hospital established in 1363, as recalled by the carved gridiron above the portal. The present building dates from a rebuilding of 1675; it was suppressed in 1785 together with the hospital and reconsecrated in 1823.
At the centre of the church stands the Florentine wooden Crucifix from which the oratory takes its name, a sculpture dating from the late 15th to the early 16th century, highly venerated in the village and linked to a tradition of miracles. The single-nave interior has a groin vault on pietra serena corbels, a late 17th-century altar and an 18th-century confessional.
After restorations in 1969 and 2002 the oratory was set up as the seat of the Museo di Arte Sacra di Incisa Valdarno, which displays works and liturgical furnishings from the area.
