About the museum
The museum is part of MUSA Reggia di Portici and of the Museums of Agricultural Sciences of the University of Naples Federico II. It takes its name from Carlo Santini, who from the 1930s onwards gathered most of the machines of the institute and was known for his experimental research, in particular on agricultural tractors.
The collections were created for teaching and demonstration purposes, so that researchers could test the new cultivation techniques made possible by the machines. On display are traction machines from the second half of the 19th century, including cable-drawn ones, electric crawler tractors and a four-wheel-drive tractor from 1950.
The collection also includes ploughs, from the first wooden peg ploughs for animal traction to later models with a mouldboard, as well as the first row seed drills, reaping machines and stationary threshers.
