About the museum
The museum documents the maritime economy of Torre del Greco, which brought prosperity and fame to the town in the 19th century and the early decades of the 20th century. It is located in a small room of the historic Ferrovie dello Stato building and is looked after by the Torre del Greco section of the Lega Navale (Naval League).
The display includes a collection of shipyard tools, biographies of the master shipwrights (maestri d'ascia), models of local boats and teaching models, onboard equipment, navigation instruments and safety devices at sea. A photographic archive commemorates the shipowners of Torre del Greco, and some documents illustrate old trades such as sailmakers, caulkers, sawyers and ropemakers.
There is also a section on the Italian Navy and a memorial to the Antarctic expedition of Commander Ajmone Cat. Material on “Gente di Mare” can be consulted on a computer. The museum aims to pass on the town's seafaring tradition to young people.
