About the museum
The museum was set up after 1975 to gather and preserve the materials documenting the life and social activity of the Confraternita di Misericordia di Anghiari. It is housed in the old Badia, the former abbey church of San Bartolomeo Apostolo, which has been the historic seat of the Compagnia since 1817.
The main hall was originally a chapel of the old castle and housed the Compagnia del Corpus Domini, founded in 1506 and suppressed in 1785; the Misericordia bought it in 1865. During restoration work, fragments of frescoes dating from the early 15th century came to light; only part of them is visible today. The confraternity, founded in 1564 as the Compagnia dello Spirito Santo, distinguished itself during the typhus epidemic of 1817, and in 1870 it founded the Ospedale della Misericordia.
The rooms house antique stretcher carts, 19th-century confraternity robes, instruments and medical equipment from the former hospital, handwritten statutes of earlier companies, relics, display cases and an archive room. A colour PDF catalogue lists all the objects on display.
