About the museum

Since 1992 the Museo della Ceramica has been housed in Palazzo Sturm, an 18th-century residence on the River Brenta, and occupies the piano nobile (main floor) of the building. It holds the city’s ceramic collections, which were transferred to and displayed in the palazzo from that year. In 2010 the museum was expanded thanks to the bequest of ceramic objects from the Vicenza marquis Giuseppe Roi (1924–2009), after whom it is named.

The collection comprises about 1,200 pieces of majolica, porcelain and earthenware, displayed in chronological order in more than ten rooms, with sections devoted to the different production techniques. The route includes medieval fragments, majolica from the Manardi workshops of the 17th and 18th centuries, and tiles, including Dutch ones, which serve for comparison with other European production.

The most substantial holding is the majolica produced by the Antonibon between the 18th and 19th centuries. The museum also illustrates Italian majolica of the 18th century, that of Laterza and the earthenware of the 19th century, and devotes ample space to the production of Nove, Bassano and Vicenza from the early to mid-20th century, followed by a contemporary section. The veranda houses earthenware in an eclectic style, and the old kitchen displays popular dishes.
