About the museum
The museum is housed in the ancient Palazzo delle Teste, in the centre of Bassano del Grappa, opposite the Ponte Vecchio. It grew out of long and passionate research by the Poli family, grappa producers since 1898, and the family presents it as an act of gratitude towards grappa.
The route unfolds across five rooms, with texts in Italian and English and video projections in several languages. The first room traces the origins and development of the art of distillation, with reconstructions of distilling apparatus and printed documents: from the alchemists searching for the elixir of long life, to Renaissance physicians who distilled herbs and flowers for pharmaceutical purposes, up to the Venetian distillers of aqua vitae of the 17th century.
The second room illustrates the origin of grappa, its raw material (the vinaccia, or grape pomace) and the different distillation methods, with images, stills and tools. In the third room a video on production can be seen. The fourth room holds the largest and most complete collection of miniature grappa bottles (mignon) known in Italy, with bottles of rare vintage grappas from the first half of the 20th century and two olfactometers that let visitors smell twenty different distillates and note their aroma descriptors. Another branch of the Poli Museo della Grappa is at Schiavon, next to the distillery.
