About the museum
The museum is housed in the ancient Torre di Sant'Agnese and in a small adjoining building. It opened on 16 May 1999 as a museum of the town's history.
The displays follow a chronological route that traces the history of Portogruaro from the 12th to the 20th century. Through its objects, it illustrates the public, private, civic and religious life of the community.
Among the oldest exhibits are swords, daggers, bronze and iron tools and episcopal seals. They bear witness to clashes between factions, everyday trades and the role of the bishop of Concordia in the early centuries of the town. Seals and ducal commissions, in turn, tell of Portogruaro's mercantile vocation, which developed along the banks of the Lemene river, and of its strategic importance for the Republic of Venice.
