About the museum
The Museo della Civiltà Contadina di Montecastelli Pisano, a fortified village a few kilometres from Castelnuovo di Val di Cecina, was founded in 1985 through the collaboration of residents, who donated the objects now on display. The museum is housed in two rooms on the ground floor of a building inside the village walls.
The collection documents the life of farming families between the 19th and early 20th centuries and pays tribute to the people who shaped the Tuscan landscape through their work. The objects have been restored and catalogued.
On display are tools for agriculture, forestry and weaving, and the tools of old trades such as the carpenter, shoemaker, farrier and saddler, together with moulds for roof tiles and bricks, and scales. The display also illustrates the often difficult economic and environmental conditions of village life.
