About the museum
The museum is housed in a manor house in the old Monte Mannu district of Bitti, in northern Barbagia. The building faithfully reproduces the local traditional architecture, with its portico and granite staircases and wooden floors and ceilings, and it lies a few steps from the parish church.
The completely renewed display comprises nine thematic multimedia and interactive rooms spread over two floors. The upper floor, the living area, evokes customs, habits, beliefs and the bread-making cycle of pane carasatu in five rooms: the best parlour (S'Istanzia 'e vonu), the kitchen, the bedroom, the story of Bitti and its sacred places, and the bread room. On the lower floor, tools of various kinds illustrate the work of the shepherd, the farmer and the craftsman, as well as the women's art of spinning and weaving, including the production of the blankets known as “sas vrassatas”. Four rooms tell the story of the soundscape, the shepherd as guardian of the land, cheese and the land, and the sound of the loom. The route combines the objects with videos by the anthropologist Bachisio Bandinu and with sounds such as the beat of the loom and the bells of the flocks.
