About the museum
The multimedia museum of canto a tenore, opened in summer 2005 by the Bitti municipal administration, is the first Sardinian museum dedicated to this form of polyphonic singing, recognised by UNESCO as a masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity. It is located in the Monte Mannu district, near the parish church, in a wing of the Museo della civiltà pastorale e contadina (MUBI), in a traditional house with a wooden loft (“taulatu”) and a ceiling of juniper reeds and beams.
The museum is devoted to the study and promotion of canto a tenore. It holds recordings of well-known groups from the island, hosts conferences on Sardinian and Mediterranean singing and works with countries where traditional forms of singing still survive. It is run by the Istelai cooperative.
The route is divided into five rooms: a circle of four audiovisual columns representing the four voices of the tenore, multimedia stations with screens and headphones, a room with CDs and viewers for immersive 360° experiences, an area with eight video clips of well-known groups, and a dance hall where you can imitate the steps shown in a video.
