About the museum
MAST grew out of more than thirty years of work by the Istituto delle Civiltà del Mare (I.Ci.Mar.), which in 2003 signed an agreement with the municipality (Comune) of San Teodoro to set up the Museo delle Civiltà del Mare. The first display dates back about twenty years. The museum is housed in a complex of three hexagonal buildings, covering around 1,300 square metres, at Niuloni.
In 2025 the museum resumed its activity: on 24 January it received recognition from the Soprintendenza and officially became the Museo Archeologico di San Teodoro, while a municipal resolution of June 2025 approved the new name and the regulations. The Comune owns the museum, while its management is entrusted to the I.Ci.Mar.
The collection consists mainly of finds recovered from the seabed off the coast of San Teodoro, sometimes at a depth of only a few metres, and of donations from the local community. The route runs from the Punic and Roman-Republican periods through the imperial age, with the Baia Salinedda shipwreck, up to the Middle Ages and the modern period. Among the best-known pieces are a hoard of coins, amphorae, a fragment of a Roman helmet and the rare gold tremissis of the Byzantine emperor Phocas.
