About the museum
The Nuragic sanctuary of Janna 'e Pruna and Su Notante consists of a series of monuments set at different heights along the summit stretch of a mountain route, between the small valley of the Riu Remulis and the pass of Janna 'e Pruna. It lies about 12 kilometres from Irgoli, along the road to Norghio, in a natural setting of granite rocks and Mediterranean scrub.
The route followed a natural way linking the valley of the Riu Cedrino with that of the Riu Siniscola, communication routes from the coast into the interior of the island, and the sacred complex was its focal point. The archaeological area stands on Monte Senes, in a commanding position above the Cedrino valley with a view as far as the Gulf of Orosei, and comprises two sacred enclosures, a temple and other buildings linked to the activities of the sanctuary.
The temple, built of well-worked granite blocks laid in regular courses, opens onto an almost rectangular forecourt that leads to a circular cella with a central hearth and a seat along the wall. Excavations have yielded fragments of impasto pottery and bronze votive offerings, including a votive sword, a tanged dagger, the antler of a deer from a bronze figurine and a fragment of a copper ingot. The sacred spring of Su Notante, built over a perennial source, was dedicated to the cult of water.
