About the museum
The oratory was built between 1490 and 1494 to house an image of the Annunciation painted on the wall of a house, which was considered miraculous after the image was seen to weep, drawing numerous pilgrims. The Comune di Foligno acquired the building, and the new little church was consecrated by the bishop Luca Borsciani Cibo; the design is attributed, without certain evidence, to Francesco di Bartolomeo da Pietrasanta.
The present form dates largely from the restorations of 1830, when the façade was renewed by Vincenzo Vitali. The interior, rectangular in plan, has five altars set in large niches, with marble pilasters and frames, and a tall grille that once separated the faithful from the sacred space.
The most famous work is the fresco of the Baptism of Christ, painted by Perugino on the altar of Saint John the Baptist in the years between the late 15th and early 16th century. On the altar of the Annunciation is the miraculous image of the Virgin, enclosed in a carved and gilded wooden aedicule, with a 1575 fresco attributed to Ercole Ramazzani.
