About the museum
The Caoria Great War museum is a permanent exhibition on the conflict fought on the Lagorai mountain range. It was founded in 1991 by the Gruppo Alpini di Caoria, established in 1957, which still runs it and collects material found in the mountains or kept by families in the valley. Its creation is linked to renewed interest in the memory of the Great War at high altitude, and the museum was developed in collaboration with the Ecomuseo del Vanoi.
The rooms show uniforms, weapons, equipment and personal effects of Italian and Austro-Hungarian soldiers, texts and a large photographic archive documenting the harsh living conditions on both fronts. One section commemorates the young men of Caoria who served in the Austro-Hungarian army, another the civilian population evacuated, displaced or interned in Austria and in Italy. A reconstructed military post, with armoured shields and sandbags, conveys life at the front.
The Gruppo Alpini has collected the testimonies of veterans and published the diaries of soldiers from Caoria and the Vanoi valley; the books are on sale at the museum. In the surroundings are the monument of the former military cemetery at Refavaie, the broken column of the former cemetery at Busa Alta, trenches at Cima Paradisi and Cima Valsorda, and cave positions on Monte Totoga.
