About the museum
The museum was founded in 2012 with the aim of making permanent an exhibition on Lugnano in Teverina's contribution to the First World War. It is housed in an early 20th-century Liberty (Art Nouveau) building, originally a light bulb factory known as “Ex Fabbrica”. The building also houses the Antiquarium, a theatre and the municipality's historical and notarial archive, and forms the cultural centre of the town.
The first core of the collection came from the heirs of a young medical officer from Lugnano, Luigi Canepone, who donated surgical instruments and photographs taken at the front. Relics from a local collector and numerous other donations were added to these. The museum was conceived and developed by Maria Concetta Canepone and her husband Aldo Proietti.
The route is arranged by theme, with reconstructed settings and panels full of memorabilia showing the everyday life of soldiers. The medical section is particularly extensive, with surgical instruments, a medicine chest and a stretcher. Among the documents, a farewell letter written in 1917 by Lieutenant Adolfo Ferrero before the Battle of the Ortigara stands out.
