About the museum
Alviano castle stands on a hill on the left bank of the Tiber, between Orvieto and Amelia. Tradition has it that it was built at the wish of Count Offredo in 996; in 1495 Bartolomeo d’Alviano, a condottiero in the service of several Italian states, rebuilt it as a baronial residence in Renaissance style, with a double-loggia courtyard and the chapel of San Francesco, decorated with 17th-century frescoes. Three rooms next to the ticket office hold frescoes attributed to Pordenone, the only ones from that period remaining in the castle.
Today the building houses the town hall and two museum routes in the basements, which were once stables and a cannon foundry. The Historical Documentation Centre dedicated to Bartolomeo d’Alviano and the Umbrian condottieri offers a multimedia display with documents, images, photographic reproductions and video: it traces the condottiero’s career, the academy he founded in Pordenone in 1508, and the battles of Agnadello (1509) and Marignano (1515).
The Museum of Rural Life “La Terra e lo Strumento” occupies an old stable-warehouse and houses tools and objects of agricultural work and domestic life between the 19th and 20th centuries, including implements for growing wheat, vines, olives and hemp, for fishing and for crafts. The castle also has a documentation centre on the Oasi di Alviano.
