About the museum
The Antiquarium comunale is located in Tenaglie, a hamlet of Montecchio, and holds finds from the extensive Umbrian-Etruscan necropolis of Fosso San Lorenzo, within the protected area of the Parco fluviale del Tevere. The chamber tombs, cut into the soft local rock, were used between the 6th and 4th centuries BC by a prosperous community influenced by nearby Etruscan Orvieto.
The display includes a number of grave goods and gives particular prominence to two tombs found intact, which belonged to an adult and a child. Alongside everyday pottery, the exhibits show the ornaments that marked the sex and rank of the deceased: metal hair clasps and gold or silver spiral rings for locks of hair, jewellery and unguent containers for women; iron spear points and other weapons for men.
The visit helps explain the customs and way of life of this ancient population and can be combined with the nature and archaeology trail that leads to the tombs of the necropolis, about 5 km from Montecchio. Guided tours and educational activities are offered; there is a bookshop on site.
