About the museum
The museum tells the story of the Amarelli family, whose roots go back to the 11th century in Calabria, and of the processing of liquorice, a plant that grows wild along the Ionian coast. The Concio, a proto-industrial plant for processing the root, dates from 1731; in 1789 the abbot de Saint-Non published an engraving of it, and in 1907 Nicola Amarelli introduced steam power and mechanisation.
The Museo della liquirizia “Giorgio Amarelli” opened in 2001; in 2012 the Amarelli archive was declared of particular historical interest. The collections include engravings, documents, books, period photographs, farming tools, everyday objects and antique clothing.
The visit, always guided, takes place in the large space of the Concio, with bales of roots, extraction tools, old boilers for thickening liquorice paste and bronze drawing plates. A chimney bearing the initials of the baron Nicola Amarelli overlooks the panoramic terrace and the Open Air space with historic industrial machinery.
