About the museum
The museum grew out of the memory of the craft mask workshop founded in 1810 by Prospero Guatteri in Castelnovo di Sotto, which remained active until 1933. Its products, valued for the quality of their workmanship, were exported to Switzerland, to German-speaking Tyrol, to France and to other regions.
The core of the collection was bought by the municipal administration in 1997 and was enriched in 2002 by a donation from the collector Eugenio Gabrielli. The museum opened to the public in 2007 in the village's Rocca, serving as a documentation and research centre on masks and local festivals.
The rooms illustrate the history of the Carnival of Castelnovo di Sotto, the techniques used to make the masks and the evolution of the parades and floats, with a section dedicated to the Società Cooperativa “Il Carnevale”.
