About the museum
The Casa dei Pontieri stands in a building beside the old boat or barge bridge (ponte di barche, o di chiatte) that linked Boretto with Viadana. The bridge was destroyed in 1967 and made famous by scenes from the film “Don Camillo monsignore… ma non troppo”. The collection was assembled at the wish of Romano Gialdini, son of Dino, the last chief pontoonier.
The museum offers a rich visual record of the changes in how people crossed the river. It holds objects, tools, instruments and photographs that show life and customs before the concrete bridge was built. Gialdini himself also reconstructed the bridge at a scale of 1:10.
