About the museum
The Santa Rosa terramara at Poviglio comprises two overlapping settlements dating from around 1500 BC, defended by ditches and earthen embankments. The museum displays materials from the excavations and illustrates the prehistory of the Po Valley, from everyday life in the Bronze Age to the remains of a Roman villa.
The exhibition was set up in 1996, initially as a temporary exhibition for the participants in the XIII International Congress of Archaeological and Protohistoric Sciences, and was updated in 2002 with new panels and finds. The materials, around five hundred pieces on loan from the Archaeological Heritage Authority (Soprintendenza archeologica) of Emilia-Romagna, suggest a fairly complex society, with embryonic forms of specialised craftsmanship and elites who received prized goods.
The first part concerns the Villaggio Piccolo, the oldest, with a lot of pottery and objects linked to horn working. The second is devoted to the Villaggio Grande, with bronze tools and ornaments, table vessels and large containers, amber and glass-paste beads, and a group of miniature votive horses. A final display case presents the urns from the necropolis.
