About the museum
The idea of a civic museum in Sora, to gather the stone material and above all the inscriptions found in the area, emerged at the end of the 19th century and took shape in 1979, driven by the Centro di Studi Sorani “Vincenzo Patriarca”. The seat is the former Convent of the Minori Conventuali, a 14th-century palazzo built on the polygonal masonry foundations of a Roman villa, between Piazza Mayer Ross, Piazza Umberto I and Via Friuli. It was enlarged in the 18th century and restored several times.
Only after 1999, with the acquisition of finds from the excavations in the area of the temple now enclosed by the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, was it possible to open a first room to the public, on 20 April 2005. With funding from the Regione Lazio and European funds, the route was later extended to the upper levels, to an architectural and scientific design by Gianfranco Cautilli, Mario Morganti and Alessandra Tanzilli.
Today the museum tells the story of Sora and the Liri valley, with panels, stone material and vases: from the Middle Palaeolithic to the Volscian-Samnite remains, from Romanisation, with the finds from the chapter temple, to the Middle Ages, the centuries of the Boncompagni and the reconstruction after the earthquake of 1915. It is part of the Sistema museale della Valle del Liri.
