About the museum

The Museo della Pietra was opened on 2 June 2004 in the medieval castle of Ausonia, the original core around which the village developed. The castle, largely rebuilt with white limestone from Coreno after the serious damage of the last war, has thus become a symbol of the identity and rebirth of the local community.

The museum is demo-anthropological in type and is not based on a collection of finds: it offers a reflection on the cultural uses of stone in the area, from the Middle Ages to the present day, and on the relationship between stone, environment, society and traditions. The link with the landscape is also expressed by the reference to Monte Fàmmera, the mountain that overlooks the village.

In 2007 the exhibition was extended with a showroom devoted to the natural stones of Lazio. The route includes a wooden exhibition installation, the so-called “macchina” (machine), with panels, monitors, audio equipment and display cases illustrating the territory, the history of the castle and stone-working techniques, followed by a section of panels that explores the uses and conceptions of stone in more detail.

Highlights

  • The wooden exhibition “macchina” with panels, monitors and display cases on the territory and the castle’s history
  • Section of panels on local uses of stone, partly interactive
  • Showroom of the natural stones of Lazio, including basalt, peperino, tuff, travertine and Perlato di Coreno
  • Medieval castle rebuilt with white Coreno stone
  • Route with antique tools for working stone

Permanent exhibition

  • Percorso espositivo sulla pietra – The wooden exhibition “macchina”, panels on local uses of stone and the showroom of the natural stones of Lazio in the medieval castle.
