About the museum
The museum is housed in the rebuilt birthplace of Saint Pompilio Maria Pirrotti in Montecalvo Irpino. It was here, on 16 March 2001, during restoration work, that the ancient image of the Madonna “Mamma Bella dell'Abbondanza” was found; it is now venerated in the parish church of the village.
The museum was founded on 29 December 1898 and is one of the oldest religious museums in Campania. It was set up on the initiative of the parish priest Pompilio Pirrotti, a great-nephew of the saint, who wanted to enrich the collection of relics of Saint Pompilio kept in the family home. The museum was made possible by the generosity of the faithful.
The rooms hold around 450 objects, catalogued by the heritage authority (Soprintendenza) of Salerno and Avellino: works of art and furnishings that belonged to the churches of Montecalvo, and mementos of the saint's presence in his native village.
