About the museum

The Fortress of Castrocaro has dominated the Montone valley for over a thousand years. It was built on a cliff of spungone, an ancient rock formation of marine origin. Inhabited since prehistory and first mentioned in 961 as Castrum Aukario, it played a strategic role between Romagna and Tuscany.

Contested over the centuries by the empire, the papacy and local lordships, it became one of the main bulwarks of Florentine Romagna under the Republic of Florence. After a long period of abandonment it was restored in the 20th century and returned to the community: today it is one of the best-preserved medieval fortified complexes in Italy, with a museum, events and initiatives on the history and traditions of the area.

Since 2000 the Pro Loco has organised guided visits and themed routes. The route takes in the Torre delle Segrete, the church of Santa Barbara, the troglodyte caves, the inner courtyards, the Bombarde battlements and the Palazzo del Castellano, where the Museo storico del Castello e della Città and the permanent exhibition on the history of the Fortress are housed.
