About the museum

The archaeological museum of Forlì is named after Antonio Santarelli, considered the father of Forlì archaeology, and gathers the evidence of settlement in the Forlì area from prehistory to Late Antiquity. It is housed on the ground floor of Palazzo del Merenda, in Corso della Repubblica, together with the city's other civic collections.

The collections include Palaeolithic and Neolithic materials, Bronze Age finds from Coriano and Vecchiazzano, Iron Age objects such as the stele of San Varano and the helmet and breastplate of Carpena, grave goods with weapons from Dovadola and Gallic tombs from Rocca San Casciano. From the Roman city of Forum Livii come geometric mosaics, inscriptions and a female head in marble; from the territory come a bas-relief with a sacrifice scene from the villa of Fiumana and mosaics of the Theodoric period from Meldola.

The museum also includes the Monetiere Santarelli, with more than 7,000 Roman and medieval coins from the area, and a section of ancient ceramics. For many years the museum has not been open to the public: a transfer of the collection to another city complex is planned, but no reopening date has been announced.
