About the museum
The Rocca di Offagna was built in just two years, between 1454 and 1456, at the wish of the Republic of Ancona, which intended it as a bulwark against nearby Osimo. It stands on the highest point of the village, on a spur of tufa and sandstone, and is an example of military architecture in transition between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance: alongside the archers' positions along the walls, it has around fifty emplacements for bombards, designed for the age of gunpowder.
The plan is quadrangular and culminates in the central keep. The visit follows the wall walk, passes through the Segrete rooms, which served as prisons, and ends on the terrace at the top of the tower, with a 360-degree view.
Inside is the Museo delle Armi Antiche e della Rocca Medievale. Thanks to collaboration with the Museo di Stato della Repubblica di San Marino, the Accademia di Oplologia e Militaria di Ancona and the Soprintendenza ai Beni Archeologici per le Marche, it displays weapons and armour from the 15th and 16th centuries, Picene warriors' swords, antique firearms, a small collection of Greek ceramics and a selection of Far West weapons. The permanent exhibition “Cacciatori e Guerrieri dalla pietra all'acciaio” traces the evolution of weapons from prehistory onward.
