About the museum
The museum is dedicated to Saint Joseph of Copertino (Giuseppe Maria Desa, Copertino 1603 – Osimo 1663) and is housed in the convent of the Conventual Friars Minor, in the area of the sanctuary that bears his name. The route includes the rooms in which the saint lived from 1657 until his death.
The sanctuary stands on a 13th-century church dedicated to Saint Francis, which received a Baroque interior in the 18th century after the saint's canonisation; the façade retains its Romanesque-Gothic appearance. The oratory where Mass was celebrated and the three small rooms inhabited by the saint have been kept in their original state.
The museum holds the saint's vestments and religious garments, liturgical furnishings, sacred images painted in miniature on parchment and documentary material from the 16th century. In the private chapel stands a wooden altar with a 17th-century canvas, The Birth of Mary, by an unknown artist of the school of Claudio Ridolfi.
