About the museum
The museum was inaugurated in June 2004 in the former convent of San Francesco in Treia. It displays sculpture fragments, numerous inscriptions and important finds with an Egyptian character, which reflect the links of the Roman city of Trea with Eastern civilisations, in particular Egypt.
Many materials come from the ancient settlement of Trea, about one and a half kilometres from the present town, near the sanctuary of the Santissimo Crocifisso. Excavations uncovered a sanctuary dedicated to the Egyptian-Oriental deities Isis and Serapis, probably founded around the middle of the 2nd century AD. After the fire that damaged the old church of the Crocifisso in 1902, two Ptolemaic diorite statuettes from the 3rd century BC, one female and one male, about 77.5 cm tall, were found during the demolition of the old bell tower.
The statuettes, removed from the bell tower in 1996 and presented in 1997 at the exhibition “Iside. Il mito, il mistero, la magia” in Milan, are now kept in the museum; copies have been placed on the bell tower. The route also includes the plan of the Roman settlement, epigraphic and sculptural material, portraits, a toga statue and the head of the god Serapis.
