About the museum
The museum in Barchi, in the municipality of Terre Roveresche, tells two aspects that shaped life in the area. The first section, “Girando attorno a un filo” (Turning Around a Thread), illustrates the materials, techniques and objects made by the potters of Vergineto, San Bartolo and Villa del Monte, in particular containers for storing food and carrying water.
Terracotta production in Villa del Monte is documented from at least the 18th century, and in the 1950s ten kilns were still working. The orcio, a light and versatile clay jug, was found in noble houses as well as in peasant homes.
The second section is devoted to the Banda Grossi, the band of brigands led by Terenzio Grossi (1832–1862) that operated around 1860. After the end of the temporal power of the popes and with compulsory conscription in the new Kingdom of Italy, some priests and peasants saw in this band a sign of resistance.
