About the museum
The museum is housed on the ground floor of the ancient convent of Santa Maria del Gesù, in the historic centre of Viggiano. The building was constructed in 1478 by Franciscan friars and, after restoration, was assigned to preserve the material memory of the community.
The route presents more than three hundred objects that document everyday life in the past and the work of local families: farming and herding, wine production, dairy processing and the craft trades of the shoemaker, the carpenter and the blacksmith.
Some rooms recreate domestic interiors, such as a traditional kitchen and a bedroom of the late 19th-century middle class. Other spaces are dedicated to children's games and to devotion to the Black Madonna, which is deeply felt in Viggiano. With augmented reality, visitors who point a smartphone or tablet at certain graphic signs see workshops and rooms come to life, and objects “speak” to them.
