About the museum
The museum is displayed on the ground floor of the historic building at Via Carlo Besana 8 in Lodi, built by royal decree in 1896 near the railway station and now home to the Accademia delle Arti Gerundia. It is supported by the municipality and the province of Lodi, and is part of the Sistema Museale Lodigiano and the Associazione Nazionale Piccoli Musei.
The teaching collection comprises over 500 musical instruments, arranged according to the classification devised by Erich von Hornbostel and Curt Sachs in 1914: chordophones, aerophones, idiophones, membranophones, and mechanical and electrical instruments. The route traces the history of the art of sound, from ancient instruments and various ethnic traditions to those in use today. One section brings together archaeological finds with musical references, from the Roman period and the Chinese dynasties, while the violin-making workshop shows the stages of building a violin and the tools of the luthier.
Another section is devoted to sound reproduction equipment: crystal radio, gramophone, wire and tape recorders, valve radio, stereo turntables, record players and jukeboxes, including a Recordorama from 1962 that appears to be the only working example left in Italy. The museum's emblem is the Faun playing a double aulos, from the Greek period.
