About the museum
The Museo di Arte Povera is based in Sogliano al Rubicone, in the restored rooms of the Palazzo Marcosanti-Ripa, also known as the Palazzo della Cultura. The name refers to the “poverty” of the material, printed paper, and not to an art movement of the 20th century: the collection is a true collection of paper.
The rooms house lithographs and chromolithographs from the invention of lithography at the end of the 18th century, art books and illustrated editions by 20th-century artists such as Giorgio De Chirico, Giacomo Manzù and Ugo Nespolo, as well as monographs on Canova and Michelangelo with photographs by Mimmo Jodice and Aurelio Amendola.
One section is devoted to facsimiles of illuminated manuscripts, psalters, books of hours, missals and herbals, including the Codex Purpureus Rossanensis and the Book of Kells. The Codice Resta, a collection of drawings and miniatures by Italian artists, is regarded as the emblem of the route. The display is completed by collectible picture cards (figurine), postcards, advertising posters, greeting cards, almanacs and barbers' scented calendars.
