About the museum

The museum commemorates the Battle of the Rubicone, fought between late September and early October 1944 on the Romagna side of the Gothic Line, when the German defensive lines clashed with the advance of the Allied armies heading for the plain of Cesena. The passage of the front also brought a profound social and cultural transformation to the area.

The museum opened in 2005, in an old cellar in the historic centre of Roncofreddo that the Allies had used as a radio station, through an agreement between the collector Paolo Savini and the municipality. The collection consists of relics, uniforms, photographs and everyday objects belonging to soldiers.

The exhibition is organised into nine thematic sections, each with an introductory panel and a rich set of images. The first section presents a picture of life in Roncofreddo before the war. The following sections cover the Gothic Line and the fighting on the Forlì stretch, the Allied military government and the German defensive lines, the partisan Resistance, Allied bombing and the reconstruction of the town. Most of the images come from the archives of the Imperial War Museum in London and from local institutions such as the municipal library and the Istituto storico della Resistenza di Forlì-Cesena.
