About the museum
The museum opened on 28 May 1900 at the wish of Monsignor Giovanni Paponi, with the aim of safeguarding and displaying the treasures of the castle of Montecatini Alto that had survived the sacking of 1554. In 1907 the authorities responsible for protecting the artistic heritage, concerned for the fate of the works, asked for it to be dismantled, but Paponi managed to keep the museum open to the public.
In 1934 his nephew, Don Tito Paponi, expanded it to house the large fresco of Christ in Glory among angels and saints, which came from the church of the convent of Sant'Agostino. A serious theft in January 1980 led to its closure; today the museum is open to visitors again and also houses the permanent nativity scene of the Propositura.
The collection, modest but precious, includes a silver reliquary, enamels from the 14th and 15th centuries, a detached 13th-century fresco and a wooden Madonna and Child from the 12th–13th century. Among the best-known pieces is also the reliquary of Saint Barbara, which holds the upper part of the saint's skull.
