About the museum

Villa Bellavista in Buggiano is one of the most important examples of late 17th-century Tuscan architecture. It was commissioned by Fabio Feroni, a merchant of international standing who obtained the title of marquis in 1681. The building was designed by Antonio Maria Ferri, an architect fashionable at the court of Grand Duke Cosimo III, and built between 1696 and 1699 together with the chapel, the garden and the conduit that brought water from the hill of Stignano. In 1829 the property passed to the Bonaguidi family and then to the papal general Ermanno Kanzler.

In 1939 the villa was bought by the Ministry of the Interior, Directorate General of Fire Services, which restored it. Today the ground floor houses the Museo regionale dei Vigili del Fuoco, with vehicles, objects and uniforms of the Corps from 1870 to the 1960s.

The collections include tools, costumes and images documenting the firefighters’ work over the decades. Outside, the historic Agusta-Bell 204B helicopter is on display. Among the amphibious vehicles and boats, notable items include a 1970 Fiat amphibian from the La Spezia command, a 1955 wooden lagoon boat formerly used by the Venice command and some rubber dinghies used by the Americans during the war.
