About the museum

The museum is devoted to bricks and terracottas, whose production is widespread throughout Umbria and which, in Marsciano, is the common thread of the town’s urban, economic and social history: the town was built in brick and is the seat of the main industrial activity of the sector. Opened to the public in 2002, it reached full operation in March 2004 with the creation of a museum network with “antennas” in other places in Umbria, including ancient kilns at Compignano and San Fortunato and the documentation centre on fired clay (cotto) at Castel Viscardo.

It is housed in Palazzo Pietromarchi, a noble residence built in the 14th century by the Bulgarelli counts of Marsciano and restored by the municipality with ministerial funding. The palace is also the hub of the town’s cultural offer, with temporary exhibitions, events and educational activities.

The rooms present the funerary goods of an Etruscan tomb of the 4th century BC, Etruscan-Roman terracottas, architectural terracottas, craft and industrial bricks, glazed terracottas and early modern jars. In the palace there is also a Madonna enthroned with the Child, angels, Saint Sylvester and Saint Roch from the circle of Pinturicchio (around 1500), and two displays devoted to the local artists Antonio Ranocchia (1915–1989) and Alfredo Marinacci (1924–1986).
