About the museum
The Museo diocesano di San Severo was established on 16 May 1992 to preserve, enhance and promote the historic and artistic heritage of the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta and of the whole diocese. It is located in Vico Freddo, in the underground rooms of the 17th-century Palazzo del Seminario.
The display takes place in a single space and brings together archaeological finds, works of art and liturgical furnishings dating from the 5th century BC to the 20th century: sacred silverware, votive jewellery, wooden and stone statues, vestments and paintings from different periods.
The main pieces include a stone and onyx reliquary of 1045, medieval alms dishes in repoussé copper, medieval and Renaissance polychrome wooden statues, Baroque silver monstrances and a small lapidarium (collection of inscribed stones) with inscriptions from the 5th to 3rd centuries BC from Teanum Apulum and from the Tremiti Islands (Sant’Agata).
