About the museum
The museum was founded in 1974 to document the agro-pastoral culture and everyday life of the pre-Alpine communities through objects, tools, garments and implements in common use. Alongside the exhibition it manages an archive of photographs, documents, recordings and videos on the tangible and intangible heritage of Premana.
After four years of closure for structural consolidation work, the museum reopened in spring 2024, to coincide with its fiftieth anniversary, with a renewal of the displays and the exhibition layout. A multimedia installation had been inaugurated in January 2020, and in 2026 a new archive room was opened for documents, photographs and local parchments, set up in the former pharmacy space made available by the Comune.
There are three themed rooms. The Sala del Ferro (Iron Room) traces the working of iron, from the extraction of siderite in pre-Roman times to the emigration of blacksmiths to Venice, Milan and Carrara, with a reconstructed forge and modern production of scissors, knives, axes and cowbells. The Sala del Costume (Costume Room) presents traditional garments, equipment for weaving wool and hemp, and a reconstructed kitchen; of particular note is the “plastron”, the embroidered bodice worn by women. The Sala dell’Agricoltura (Agriculture Room) holds the tools of mountain farmers and includes an alpine pasture shelter, a small dairy (casina), a domestic workshop and a mill. Outside there is a park with a picnic area, play areas and an amphitheatre.
