About the museum
The Museo etnomusicale “Celestino Coscia e Antonio Bocchino” opened on 21 February 2004, during the Carnival, with a conference on the relationship between tradition and the museum. The name recalls two protagonists of Montemarano’s folk music: Celestino Coscia, a player of the double cane flute, and Antonio Bocchino, maker and player of the tambourine and the scacciapensieri (jew’s harp).
The museum tells the story of the Montemarano tarantella, the dance and song of the village Carnival, and pays tribute to other performers who reworked and handed it down, such as Domenico Ambrosino on the clarinet, Domenico Picariello on the accordion, and the duo Giacomo and Francesco Erricolo, with ciaramella and accordion.
Besides traditional costumes, the display includes numerous musical instruments made and played by the village’s elders: double cane and elderberry flutes, a flute and a trumpet made of chestnut bark, the ciaramella, clarinet, harmonica and the bagpipe known as the “surdolina”, which recalls the last player of the Christmas Novena in the 1930s.
