About the museum
The Montemarano museum is presented as the first case in southern Italy of collecting and inventorying sacred vestments. It holds precious textiles, largely of southern Italian manufacture, dating from the 16th to the early 20th century.
Among the most significant pieces are the vestments of Bishop Celestino Labonia (1670–1720), the gifts of Pope Benedict XIII for the Jubilee Year of 1725 and a 17th-century robe of the Madonna of Sicilian manufacture.
The venue is the former church of the Purgatorio, created at the beginning of the 18th century by enlarging the existing family chapel of the Aliasi family. The walls preserve devotional frescoes and, in the lunettes, scenes of tragic death that express 18th-century popular piety.
