About the museum
The museum, run by the Historical Institute of the Resistance and Contemporary Age of the Province of Imperia (ISRECIm), is located in Costa di Carpasio, in the Valle Argentina. It presents original materials and artefacts linked to the guerrilla warfare fought by partisans in the mountainous hinterland of the Ponente Ligure (western Liguria) between 1943 and 1945, and illustrates the life and actions of the partisan formations during the war of liberation. It holds around 300 historical artefacts and about 200 photographs.
In the lower room a large topographic map shows the operational areas of the brigades of the I Zona Liguria command, where the II Division “F. Cascione” and the VI Division “S. Bonfante” operated. Original uniforms and the lanterns used to light the paths at night are on display, alongside documents and photographs on life and the environment in Liguria. The upper room contains, among other things, a German MG 42 machine gun, the wreckage of a German aircraft that crashed at Rocca Barbone, in the locality of Realdo, and containers with weapons and ammunition dropped by Allied aircraft at Pian Rosso di Viozene and in the Alto area. Nearby stands the great chestnut tree that served as an emergency shelter for ill fighters.
