About the museum

Two exhibition routes are housed in the Palazzo Museale of Forni Avoltri in Carnia, both part of the Carnia museum system (CarniaMusei). The ethnographic museum, set up in 1992, documents everyday life in Carnia between the 19th century and the Second World War, with tools of traditional crafts and work such as woodworking, hay-making and the making of gerle (back baskets).

The collection also includes reconstructions of several rooms, such as a mountain hut (malga), a kitchen and a bedroom, and a section on spinning and weaving, with work clothes, ceremonial clothes and trousseau garments.

Since 2008 the permanent exhibition “Forni Avoltri nella Grande Guerra”, on the second floor of the palace, has told the story of the fighting on the upper Val Degano front, between the Coglians, Navagiust, Avanza and Chiadenis mountains and the passes of Cacciatoi, Valle Inferno, Giramondo and Volaia. Objects, relics and war finds from those places are on show, from field kitchens to helmets and weapons, together with postcards and period photographs of the lives of soldiers and the local population. A gallery position with bunk beds, found on the Navagiust in 2007, has been faithfully reconstructed.
