About the museum
The museum was founded in 2002 on the initiative of the collectors Emanuele Pachner and Francesco Pomarè, with the aim of honouring the area where the Piave rises and the men who faced each other there during the First World War. It is housed in an old forge, later the municipal slaughterhouse, by the Cascatelle del Mühlbach.
Its aim is to offer a way of reading the Comelico and Sappada front and to recall, through personal objects and equipment, the life of soldiers at high altitude. The exhibits include uniforms and clothing, tools for life in the trenches, field stoves of the Italian and Austrian armies, and documents and photographs of local interest. A diorama recreates the hut of an Italian officer.
On the outer wall, visible from the walkway leading to the Cascatelle, a large mural from 2003 by Pierantonio Chiaradia depicts a war scene in the Val Sesis. The museum is a good starting point for excursions to areas rich in First World War remains.
