About the museum

The Museo etnografico “Maestro Giuseppe Fontana” is located in Cima Sappada, the most isolated hamlet of the municipality, known for its many 19th-century wooden farmhouses. It holds objects and artefacts of Alpine life in Sappada, as well as historical information about the community that settled there in the Middle Ages.

In the new display the route runs from the natural environment to the identity of the population. It starts with the geology, flora and fauna of the Sappada basin, with samples of local rocks, some fossils, a diorama reconstructing a natural habitat and a collection of birds.

The main hall houses the tools of agricultural, forestry, pastoral and craft work: the woodcutter’s work, a section devoted to snow, the shepherd, the cowshed, the hayloft and farm work, transport, and the trades of the wheelwright, blacksmith, carpenter, shoemaker, tailor and weaver. At the centre of the museum, as in village life, a section illustrates popular religiosity at the main moments of the liturgical year. The route ends with the masks of the Sappada Carnival (vosenòcht), a tradition that is still alive, including the figure of the Rollate.
