About the museum

The ethnographic museum grew out of a spontaneous initiative by local residents. In the winter of 1992, some villagers set up a traditional Carnic nativity scene in the hamlet of Cjamp, with foam figures dressed in local costume. When the festivities were over, the community wanted to continue the project, and the figures were moved to the former town hall, one of the oldest buildings in the village.

Around this initial nucleus, furnishings, utensils and work tools donated by families from Forni Avoltri and its hamlets have been collected. The displays are organised by theme and document everyday life, rites and traditions from the 19th century to the period after the two world wars: the kitchen, the bedroom, the mountain pasture (malga) and hay-making, trades and household trousseaux. The museum’s name, in Friulian, means “how we were”.

On the ground floor of the same building, since 2008, there has been a permanent exhibition on the Great War, dedicated to the front in the upper Degano Valley and the surrounding peaks. It includes military finds and objects donated by local people, postcards and period photographs of the lives of soldiers and the village, and a reconstruction of a tunnel position with bunk beds, inspired by one discovered on Monte Navagiust in 2007.
